The Town of Elon is proud of its downtown and the bustling shops and restaurants that make Downtown Elon their home. With a focus on increasing the activity in downtown, the Town of Elon began a journey to becoming a Main Street Community and achieved that goal in July 2018. Every year shows an increase in new events for the entire family.

Downtown Elon started in the early 1890s with the construction of our first commercial building. The general store served the surrounding communities from its prominent location at the crossroads beside the railroad tracks. Downtown Elon has grown since then to include a wide variety of restaurants, retail shops, salons, and more.

Our vision: Downtown Elon is powered by a diverse community of families, professionals, students, and retirees. It serves as the center of life-long learning and creative activities for Alamance County, that is enhanced by the energy of Elon University, locally-owned restaurants and shops, and a collection of visual art.

Our mission is to optimize downtown opportunities and lead the efforts in and beautification of the downtown district.

Join us in Downtown Elon. Your destination for good food, good shops, and good times.

About the Organization

Downtown Elon is a department of the Town of Elon dedicated to promoting downtown and offering support to existing and potential business and property owners. The Town designated an 8 block area as the downtown development area in the 2014 Downtown Master Plan. The Town of Elon became an accredited Main Street Community in 2019.

Downtown Elon staff work with a 7 member Advisory Board and has four volunteer committees including the Promotions Committee, Design Committee, Economic Vitality Committee, and the Organization Committee that work to implement our programs, goals, and objectives.

Our goal is to create an environment that fosters the redevelopment of the Downtown Elon district and to serve as a catalyst for private development and public partnerships.
